If beer darts made you feel dangerous and you want more of that feeling then stump is for you! Stump is a drinking game that was adapted from a German game called Hammerschlagen. To play, you need a bigass stump, a hammer, some nails, and LOTS of beer. 

Equipment

1. Hammer: Any and all varieties of hammers may be used. Most traditional hammers have wooden handles, however, after a few rounds of play, the handles can sometimes start to shatter. In the event that you decide to utilize wood, be sure to pay extra attention to the stability of the neck on a consistent basis.

2. Nails: Any length of nail is okay; however, four to six inches is the sweet spot for nail length. You have to have plenty for one nail per individual for each game (Exception: Team Games). Feel free to try out a variety of nail lengths according on your current degree of expertise and the kind of stump you’re working with (see stump specifications below).

3. The stump should be strong enough to sustain blows to the topside without toppling over. The top of the stump should be level with the knee or just slightly lower and the stump itself should stand at around knee level. 4. Alcohol Beer is the recommended alcoholic beverage to drink in Stump; other alcoholic beverages should only be utilized as a last resort. When you go to the shop, you should make sure to pick up plenty; the bare minimum is two cans with a capacity of 12 ounces for each individual participant in each game. There is nothing worse than a Stump session ending due to a shortage of beer, or, God forbid, running out of beer during the game-ending Waterfall. Therefore, it is always preferable to have an excessive amount of beers on hand than an insufficient amount when playing the stump drinking game.

Before Beginning the drinking game stump

1. It is important to assign a single individual to get the stump ready for play. It is customary for the winner of the previous game to be given the responsibility of preparing the stump for the subsequent game after it.

2. To begin preparing the stump, first decide the total number of players or teams that will be competing in the game. Each participant should have their own individual nail that is driven into the upper surface of the stump. The nails should be hammered into the stump in a straight line and should be driven in as little as possible; yet, they should be driven in deep enough so that they are stable and will not fly out if they are hit at an angle. It is important that the nails be dispersed uniformly in a circular pattern around the surface of the stump.

3. In order to “claim” a nail, each player must first position his or her foot on the stump that is adjacent to the nail. This nail will serve as his throughout the entirety of the competition. It is usually accepted that individuals will stake their claim on the nail that is located directly in front of them; however, this does not have to be the case in all situations.

4. Each participant is required to have a beer (in a can, bottle, cup, or other acceptable containers that can hold beer) on their person at all times. “On their person” is defined as being supported wholly by the participant, and not by any other items. The one and only time that this regulation is waived is when players are required to do Home Improvement (for more information, see the Rules of Play). During this time, players are permitted to set their drink down and continue playing until Home Improvement is finished.

5. It is customary to use the claw of the hammer to open your drink, even if doing so interrupts the flow of the game, and this should be done even if it causes a delay.

The winner of Stump is the player whose nail is the last one to remain upright.

1. Before regaining control of the hammer, each player is required to toss it in such a way that it completes at least one full revolution of 360 degrees before he touches it again. Under no circumstances is the player going to be allowed to have more than one throw every turn (unless it is part of a Trick – see Rule 2a).

2. Once the hammer has been caught, the player must make an effort to bring it crashing down without delay or hesitation against one of their opponent’s nails, driving it into the stump. Any effort to “cock” or “aim” the hammer will be seen as unfair play and will be open to criticism.

2a. The traditional toss is a back flip, with the claw of the hammer flipping over first after the hammer. On the other hand, any and all non-standard throws are not only permitted but actively encouraged, so long as they do not break Rules 1 or 2. Tricks are the common name given to throws that deviate from the norm. If the trick contains a double toss (for example, going from Under the Leg to Around the Back), then the double toss must be performed as a continuous motion. It should not be an attempt to get greater control after a first toss that was performed poorly. The attempt of tricks is thought to raise the overall excitement of the game, and if they are successful, they bring with them the possibility of greater penalties for players who are playing against them.

3. If a player is successful in striking an opponent’s nail, and the nail becomes visibly shorter or bent as a result of the strike, the opponent must consume an amount of beer proportionate to the damage inflicted, with additional amounts consumed for any showmanship or Tricks displayed in the toss and catch (see Rule 2a). In this case, the number of sips should be a direct reflection of the victim’s respect for the Trick or showmanship. 4. If a player is successful

4. A Social is deemed to have occurred if any player observes sparks arising from the hammer striking a nail. Every participant is required to take a drink from their own beer. A nod to the fact that the game is thought to have originated in New England may be seen in the fact that it is customary to shout “Sparks!” when one spots sparks.

5. A player forfeits his turn and the game is regarded to be over in the event that he or she drops the hammer while it is being tossed. The participant is required to take a drink from his own beer.

5a. If a player drops the hammer while tossing it, and the hammer lands directly on top of the stump, the player who is facing in the direction that the handle of the hammer is pointing is required to drink all of his beer. The throw is still counted as a Spazz, and the player who made the throw must now take a drink from his own beer.

6. If a player’s nail bends while they are playing the game, they have the option, but only during their turn, to straighten up their own nail. This type of work is referred to as “Home Improvement.” However, the player’s efforts are open to criticism by the other players, and he or she is free to take as much time as necessary to repair the nail to their satisfaction. It is considered a mark of respect to check that the nail is straight and at a place where it may be pounded without smudging the work.

6a. During the Home Improvement round, it is customary to anticipate that every other player would place a foot on the stump in order to increase their sense of balance.

7. If any portion of the head of a player’s nail falls below the level of the surface of the stump, that player is out of the game and does not get another round (including bending over the edge of the stump without actually entering it). If a player is still active in the game, one way to determine this is to see if it is possible to slide the tip of a fingernail below the nail’s head without encountering any resistance. If a player in any way impedes the free movement of other players, then that player will be considered inactive.

8. If a player’s nail should bend in such a way that the head of the nail emerges from below the surface of the stump, thereby eliminating the player, that player may be resurrected if another player strikes the nail in such a way that the head of the nail emerges from above the surface of the stump. This must be done regardless of the intent of the first player who struck the nail. After being revived, a player will return to the game according to the same rotation pattern that was in place before the player was eliminated.

9. Even if they aren’t actively playing, inactive gamers must nonetheless abide by Rules 4, 5a, and 6a.

After the End of the Game

After each round of play has been completed (when there is only one nail left standing), the players will rearrange themselves around the stump in a certain sequence, beginning with first place and working their way down to last place, according to the outcomes of the game.

It is normal practice for the winner of the game to fully hammer his own nail into the stump if he so chooses to do so after he has been declared the winner of the stump drinking game.

Competition in Groups

Team play is especially beneficial in situations in which there are a large number of individuals but insufficient room on the stump for each individual to place one nail. During team play, each team may have one or more nails; an option that has long been a personal favourite of mine is to provide each team with one nail measuring six inches in length and one measuring four inches in length. Because the turns are taken in a rotating fashion, one player from each team will have the opportunity to try a throw during each round. The order in which each individual on a particular team throws the coin shall stay the same for the entirety of the game. The drinking regulations apply to every single member of the team, not only the one who is currently serving as the team’s representative during any given round. During the Waterfall, ALL of the members of the team in second place are required to continue chugging their drinks until ALL of the members of the team in first place have stopped chugging, and so on and so forth until the last team has completed the task.

Nail for Communal Use or Individual Work 

a) There is a nail for communal use located smack dab in the middle of the stump. Everyone who is currently playing stays in the game until the communal nail has been driven in. However, in order to try to sink the community nail, a player must first ensure that all of his opponents’ nails have been sunk. The player who is successful in driving in the communal nail is declared the winner. This variation is most effective when played one-on-one, although it may be played with three players or more if necessary.

b) There is a finishing nail positioned smack dab in the middle of the stump. At any point, players might make an effort to hit the target nail for the mission. If the target is successfully struck, the player who made the strike has the ability to assign a duty to an opposing player. In the final stages of a game with several players, after several players have already been eliminated and the remaining players are making slow progress towards the end of the game, it is sometimes considered courteous to delete the card Home Improvement.

c) When working on home improvements, just the head of the hammer should be utilized. The use of the claw of the hammer is strictly prohibited.

Revenge Strike

When a player gets knocked out of the game, he is granted one more chance to play. During this round, he is obligated to make an effort to hit the nail of the competitor who most recently eliminated him. In the event that he is successful in sinking his opponent’s nail, the two players will trade positions in the Waterfall. The Hammer of the King

One player is given the opportunity to utilize an enormous hammer, such as a small sledgehammer, in this variant of the game, which is also referred to be Sledge Stump or Thor’s Hammer.

Play in a Tournament

It is not as simple as it seems to devise a competition that awards and deducts points from participants in accordance with their hammer abilities, defensive methods, and adherence to the spirit of the game they are playing. For the 18 players, there will be three stumps with six persons apiece.

1) Additional options to change the scoring may include the following: – A bonus of half a point for the “kill” if the nail is driven in straight (as opposed to sideways)

– A penalty of 0.5 points will be assessed for dropping the hammer.

– A one-point bonus for a “one shot kill,” in which only one shot is required to get the nail from its immaculate state to its dead state. – If the Revenge Strike version is used, a revenge strike kill counts for two points rather than the regular one point.

One beer equals one point.
