History of the beer olympics

“Their creation was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games (Ancient Greek: Ὀλυμπιακοί Ἀγῶνες), held in Olympia, Greece from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894, leading to the first modern Games in Athens in 1896. The IOC is the governing body of the Olympic Movement (which encompasses all entities and individuals involved in the Olympic Games) with the Olympic Charter defining its structure and authority.”

Sometime after that, some guys decided that they aren’t any good at any of the traditional sports that take place during the Olympic games but they sure are good at drinking beer. Thus a new set of games was born… The beer Olympics!

Overview

Usually, teams made up of 2- 6 people get together to compete in a collection of drinking games to test their skills at hand-eye coordination and who can hold their requirements the best.

A Beer Olympics is a competition among friends where participants split into teams and compete in a variety of games, challenges, and activities to see who will be crowned the gold medalist of the beer Olympics. While there are no set rules we have gathered information from many beer Olympics participants as to their perfect idea of how the event should go down.

Making beer olympic teams:

Teams can be selected at random, they can be selected in a way the host puts people together that makes fair teams. Or everyone can just go with their friends. Depending on the number of participants the games can happen with two-6 people on a team.

Once the teams are selected usually a few weeks prior to the event the teams are encouraged to dress up in a way their team sees fit! Oftentimes points can be awarded to the best-dressed team!

What you need for the beer Olympics:

Beer: if you are hosting the event you will need beer as the name suggest… a lot of beer. Now everybody gets picky with beer so it’s also an option to get every team to bring their own beer of choice. Don’t be cheap with the beer you would hate to run out. You should do the math behind how many people will be attending and how many beers per event and then have extra on hand for the brave souls who want to continue drinking beer after the event is completed.

Friends: We mean they don’t have to be your friends you really just need people. But after the day’s events, we think you will all be closer friends. To pull off successful games we think the number should be at least 4. The number of people could go as high as you want or as high as the number of people allowed given the space you have organized for hosting the event.

Drinking game equipment:

The beer Olympic game ideas you come up with will ultimately decide what equipment you need. We think these are some staples you should start collecting.

  1. ping pong balls
  2. dice
  3. tables
  4. red solo cups
  5. beer bottles tops
  6. quarters
  7. deck of playing cards
  8. Coolers
  9. Cornhole boards
  10. Beersbie poles

Water:

Some high-quality h20… This is the Olympics after all and athletes will need water. Also, it is probably not a bad idea to mix in water throughout the day or it could be an awful next day.

Beer Olympic game ideas

This is a collection of beer Olympic drinking games again you don’t have to do the entire list and you can add or change the games to work to your benefit depending on the group and their abilities.

Beer Pong:

Beer pong is the game everybody knows and loves. If you don’t know the game here are the rules. Best to get as many teams going at once here so if you have more tables the better. If you need this portion to go faster use only 3 cups.

Survival Flip Cup:

Team versus team game where the losing team each round will eliminate a player while making up for the new open cup each round. No need to fill your cups to the brim. You will need plenty of solo cups for this one to ensure everyone has a clean cup.

Relay:

Use your creativity here, think relay race from your childhood. Plan a task for a player to do before they must race back and hand the baton off to the other team members. Think finish a drink then run to your task… a task we enjoy is stacking the empty beer cans on a table across from you. Finish your drink and run and stack your can on a table. The team with the highest tower at the end of the race wins.

Beer darts:

Beer darts is an outdoor game classic. Nothing says summer like throwing darts at beer cans in the backyard. If the game is taking too long move closer so people are not stuck here all day. You can have as many games going as you have darts and lawn chairs. This will help keep all teams active.

Beer ball:

Beer ball is as simple as can be, Before playing, make sure to get one ping pong ball and cans of beer for each player. To play, two teams face each other and stay on opposite sides of the table. Each player, taking turns, tries to hit one of the opponent’s cans with the ping pong ball.

Dizzy bat:

Hope you don’t get dizzy easily…. This one is surely good for a laugh. Grab a beer and a bat… your team will take turns being the batter or the pitcher. The first batter drinks his drink and then spins the number of seconds it took him to finish, the other teammate tosses an empty can to the batter and he attempts to hit the empty can with the bat. Once the entire team has hit a can the time stops. Watching a dizzy player attempt to hit a beer can will prove to be quite entertaining.

Beersbie:

Beersbie is a game we love but not as many people have played. You will need beersbie poles and a frisbee. Put an empty can on each empty pole and stand with your team of two facing the other team. Take turns throwing the frisbee at the pole. More in-depth rules here

Cornhole:

A true American classic. Set your boards up and play cornhole… if you are unfamiliar with the rules we have them in detail here. You can cut the scoring down a bit to make the game go faster think 14 points rather than 21.

Icecube tray race:

Get two ice cube trays. fill them with beer. Grab two straws. Each team sends one person up. It’s a head-to-head race drinking each cube slot of beer until you get to the end. This is harder than it sounds… trust us.

Beer Olympic Events:

This is our list of favourite beer Olympic events but everyone has their preferences. As you might better understand games like beer darts and the dizzy bat will be best suited for outdoors. If your event is indoors switch out some of these games for card games or other indoor-friendly games.

Pro tips on How to Host the perfect beer Olympics:

  • Divide all the players into teams. Try and do this beforehand so the teams have some time to strategize and guess the games. This also gives the teams time to plan costumes. Make the costumes have themes it doesn’t have to be based on the country. Themes could be superheroes, counties, movies, or anything like that.
  • Decorate- every party is more fun with some decorations. Beer Olympics can be messy so we believe it’s best to host the games outside. Take some time to make your own decorations or order them online up to you. But we believe your competitors will enjoy the effort put in.
  • Food & drinks. Fast food, thinking finger food, chips, veggie tray, or any snacks of your choice should take part in the event, there will be hours of games, and every athlete will need to fuel their body. You can even make this portion a potluck style where everyone brings something to the table so you aren’t stuck with a large food bill.  Drinks don’t forget drinks that aren’t beer believe it or not some people will get sick of beer after drinking it all day. Plan for some none alcoholic drinks also such as Gatorade… think hangover prevention.
  • Get a whiteboard. Bigger the better! You can put the teams on this the events on this and a daily schedule. This will help keep everyone organized and the points transparent. Everyone likes a fair day!
  • Prizes. Buy real gold medals… or don’t… more than likely won’t do that. If this is going to be an annual thing maybe opt for a trophy that gets passed around year after year. Buy some fake medals… the kind you would win in middle school. Even with gift cards, everyone gets a little more competitive when something is on the line. Prizes don’t just have to be for the best team either. Have a little fun and offer a prize to the slowest or worst-performing team.
  • Prior to the days, events send an email out letting everyone know of the games and the rules give the people time to process the rules so you aren’t having to explain on the day of.
  • The Olympics have an opening ceremony and you should too. Have some fun get the teams to stand together and go over what will happen that day.
  • Assign a scorekeeper, as the host, you can do this too but sometimes a group has a friend who is a spreadsheet wizard who thrives at tracking scores and times. Some groups have a sober friend and sometimes when dealing with numbers sober friends are perfect for this task. Keep all the scores and times transparent so everyone feels the games are fair!
